Welcome to The Receipts. One concrete move per issue, proven on a real shop, with the export to back it. This is issue one, and it starts at zero on purpose.
THE RECEIPTS THIS WEEK
Krafty Bandit (my mom's boutique): 80 AI answer-engine citations in the last 30 days (Microsoft Clarity export, June 21 to July 20). The window before measured 71. Ad spend behind it: $0.
ryanlenk.com (my own site, launched Saturday): 0 clicks. 0 impressions. Google Search Console literally says "processing data."
That zero is not an embarrassing start I'm hiding. It's the whole point of this issue.
Day zero, on purpose
I spent the last two months running AI-search and SEO work on my mom's real Shopify boutique. It went from invisible in AI answers to 80 citations a month. The full build is written up in the case study.
But here's the problem with every case study you've ever read, including mine: you weren't there at zero. You have to trust the before picture.
So this time you get to watch. I launched my own site this weekend, and before writing another word of content, I did exactly one thing: I installed every free measurement tool while the numbers were still zero, and I screenshotted the zeros. Dated files, saved. Now whatever happens to this site next has a receipt, and you'll see every number as it moves. Including the ones that don't.
THE MOVE TO COPY THIS WEEK
Install your measurement stack before you touch your content. About 30 minutes, all free (the full step-by-step walkthrough, with the settings everyone misses, is in the measurement stack guide):
Google Search Console. Verify your domain and submit your sitemap.
Bing Webmaster Tools. Import from Search Console in two clicks. This is also where the AI Performance report lives, the one that counts citations from Microsoft's Copilots.
Microsoft Clarity. Free behavior analytics, plus the AI-citations dashboard my 80 comes from.
Google Analytics 4. Add a channel group that catches AI referrals (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com) before they hide inside your other traffic. The exact regex to paste is in the guide.
Then screenshot everything at zero and date the files. That screenshot is what makes every future win provable and every percentage honest. A number without its base is marketing.
Not sure whether AI can even see your store today? Run the 10-minute check. Fuzzy on what GEO even is? The plain-English guide is free, no email wall.
What's next
I'll publish this site's numbers as they move, zeros included. The first video, the AI team that did a month of catalog work on my mom's store in one weekend, is in production now. The free Claude skills behind it are already public: Candor on GitHub.
Talk soon,
Ryan
Every number in this issue comes from a named tool export, and I keep the originals. "Cited" means AI answers pulled from the shop's pages on how-to questions, not that AI recommends the shop to buyers. Her sales grew too; I don't credit the SEO for that, because attribution is messy and I say so.
